His father Tim Flynn needed a Blue Marlin for all of his Pacific Billfish species and we caught him one today about 300 pounds on 30-pound test.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament 2018

Capitan Clay Hensley of Chupacabra and Dr. Blake Stamper, angler and owner of Chupacabra had a big win last week at the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament in Cabo San Lucas.

After an exciting battle with a big blue marlin on the end of Dr. Stamper’s line, Team Chupacabra weighed in at 499 lbs. This landed them 2nd place overall points including releases, the biggest marlin overall and the day 3 daily jackpot. This also awarded them the largest cheque of the tournament.

With the Bisbee’s Black And Blue Marlin Tournament starting this week, the win was a perfect warm-up for what is to come. Needless to say, the fishing has been great in Los Cabos already this fall.

21st Annual Stars & Stripes Tournament Los Cabos

An Annual Charity Convention Hosted by the Hilton Los Cabos

June 22-25, 2017 ‚ÄĘ Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Named after the children it helps ‚ÄĒ the real stars of the tournament ‚ÄĒ and the striped marlin in the Sea of Cortez, Stars & Stripes began in 1997 as a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. Dick Gebhard wanted to create a fundraiser unlike any other and combine fishing, golfing and music. Since then, the tournament has grown to include seven children’s charities based in Southern California and Mexico.

The Stars & Stripes beneficiaries receive much-needed financial assistance which they can use to expand their programs. Team registration fees pay for all costs of the event. When you make a donation to Stars & Stripes, proceeds are used to match dollars raised by the beneficiary charities, allowing the money they raise to increase and create more impact.

The Stars & Stripes Tournament is now an established golf tournament, fishing tournament and music festival. This world-class charity fundraiser, held yearly in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, combines spectacular deep sea fishing and golfing on Mexico’s finest courses with beautiful accommodations and top-notch musical entertainment. The hugely popular event has raised and donated more than $23 million to worthy youth charities over the course of its 20-year history. More than just a fundraiser, Stars & Stripes creates lasting memories for the organizations it assists, as well as those participating in the event each year.

Cabo Fishing Update: Catching Stripe Marlin in the Sea Of Cortez

This week we headed out on the Sea Of Cortez in with repeat clients JB and Ashley Cox, and JB’s parents. The last time we saw the couple they were on their honeymoon in Cabo and had a great time out on the boat with Capitan Clay Hensley and crew. Here is the video made on their last visit. It paints a great picture of what a day on the boat is like.

Upon their recent return, they brought some great luck with them as we had 9 stripe marlin on the lines throughout the day. As you can imagine, this was the perfect recipe for another exciting day.

It is always a pleasure to have you and your crew onboard JB! We look forward to more great footage from our day on the water. And until next time, keep your lines tight!

Chasing The Honorary Super Slam: Fishing Los Cabos

Have you ever dreamed of completing one of the many slams the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recognizes? In the fishing industry, this is one of the highest recognized ‚Äútrophies‚ÄĚ of the sport. There are few things more challenging than completing one of the many slams the IGFA recognizes, from an angler’s perspective.

“Slams are so prestigious because they require the angler to catch a collection of some of the most elite and elusive game fish … requiring an enormous amount of angling skill and determination, great chemistry with captain and crew, patience with Mother Nature, hungry fish and a little¬†luck!‚ÄĚ states Rob Kramer, president of the IGFA in an article written for Marlin Magazine. (Source: http://www.marlinmag.com/royal-billfish-slam-fishing-world-record)

Are you aware of the difference between a slam and a world record? There are differences and rules that must be followed to be recognized as a slam holder. Slams must be weighed onboard and are highly recommended by the IGFA to be released, whereas world records must be weighed on land and kept by the IGFA. One big difference is that a slam can never be beaten, the title holder has that recognition for life, whereas a world record can be beaten.

If you find the title of being a Slam holder appealing, you are not alone. There are many anglers out there chasing the goal, first being recorded in 1992 and growing in popularity since. The record holder for the most Grand Slams is 17, held by Gabrielle Knapp of Stuart, Florida.

On board the Chupacabra off the shores of Los Cabos, Captain Clay Hensley and team has assisted anglers in catching a Grand Slam, reeling in a blue, black and stripe marlin all in the same day. Captain Clay Hensley, as an angler, has personally caught a Triple Slam twice and a Double Super Slam (2 sailfish, 2 white marlins, 2 blue marlin and 2 swordfish in one day) off the shores of Venezuela. First mate of the Chupacabra, Jason Douglas, as an angler, has caught an elusive fantasy slam as well. The experience of these two as anglers is reflected in their knowledge on board.

Below is a list and definition of the different Grand and Super Grand Slams recognized by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). In green are all the species that are found off the shores of Baja California Sur in the Sea Of Cortez or the Pacific Ocean.

Defining the 10 BLUE-WATER GRAND SLAMS:

For a grand¬†slam, three *3¬†species from that club’s list of recognized game fish must be caught (by the angler) on the same day; to nail a super grand slam, four *4¬†species are required.

**Offshore Grand Slam 3* and Super Grand Slam 4*
**Eligible species:
blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, white marlin, sailfish, swordfish, and spearfish.

Only 15 anglers have qualified for the super grand so far.

**Atlantic Offshore Grand Slam 3* and Super Grand Slam *4
**Eligible species: tunas – bluefin,
yellowfin, bigeye – and mako shark, with the provision that one billfish may be substituted for any one species.

Only 4 anglers have qualified for Grand Slam and the Super Grand Slam Club has no members, offering serious exclusivity.

**Mediterranean Grand Slam *3 and Super Grand Slam *4
**Eligible species: swordfish, spearfish, albacore and bluefin tuna.

No angler has yet qualified for the Mediterranean Grand Slam and 1 angler has the honor of the Med Super Grand Slam Club.

**Pacific Offshore Grand Slam *3 and Super Grand Slam *4
**Eligible species: bluefin,
yellowfin and bigeye tuna, and any billfish.

4 anglers have the Pacific Grand Slam and none for the Pacific Offshore Super Grand Club.

**Tuna Grand Slam *3 and Super Grand Slam *4
**Eligible species:
yellowfin, bluefin, bigeye, and albacore.

1 angler claims the Tuna Super Grand Slam and none for the Grand Slam

Defining the 3 BLUE-WATER ROYAL SLAMS:

Royal slams require an angler to catch all listed species, though he/she has a lifetime (not just one day) to do so. It’s taken much of a lifetime for many royal slam club members to realize that goal. Catches can be recognized retroactively so they can come over decades in multiple locations, multiple boats, crews, and captains. The three royal slam clubs are based on types of¬†fish:

**Billfish Royal Slam
**Nine required species:
Pacific sailfish, Atlantic sailfish, Pacific blue marlin, Atlantic blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, white marlin, swordfish and spearfish.

A total of 89 registered anglers have at this time earned the honor. Some have done so multiple times.

**Tuna Royal Slam
**Eight required species: Atlantic or Pacific bigeye, blackfin, bluefin, dogtooth, longtail,
skipjack, southern bluefin and yellowfin.

Only 3 registered anglers make up the Tuna Royal Slam Club.

**Shark Royal Slam
**Nine required species: blue,
hammerhead, mako, thresher, tiger, white, tope, whaler and porbeagle.

There are 4 registered anglers that currently qualify as members.

If you would like more information about the species of the Grand, Super Grand or Fantasy Slams that are available in the Los Cabos area please contact Captain Clay Hensley of the Chupacabra to book your charter in the Quest to gain the honor if becoming a Slam title holder. Rare Whales Spotted While Team Pelagic was Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas on the Chupacabra

It’s not always about the fishing… wait who am I kidding, IT IS always about the fishing, though the underwater world is absolutely fascinating. There is still much to be discovered and understood about the on-goings of the deep sea. It is this mystery that keeps man on his toes, continuously diving deeper in hopes of new discovery.

Occasionally, while trolling the Sea of Cortez, quoted to be the “Aquarium¬†Of The World” by famous explorer Jaques Cousteau, we come upon rare creatures of the deep. Due to the constant evolution and access to new technology¬†man is able to capture moments in time, that at one time in history were purely word of mouth myth.

Here we are, with Team Pelagic Gear on board, trolling along, patiently waiting for “The Big One” to hop on the line, when we notice an odd group of marine mammals¬†on the surface. Due to the fact that it was nowhere near the time of year to see whales in the area, we curiously and cautiously moved closer. Luckily, Team Pelagic only travels with the most modern filming equipment, as you can see from their many fantastic videos. They pulled out their drone and were able to get a non-intrusive closer look that the rare creatures we saw before us. You can see the full footage in the video below.

With further research, we believe we were able to identify the creatures as Beaked Whales. ¬†Beaked whales are one of the least known groups of mammals because of their deep-sea habitat, mysterious habits, and apparent low abundance.¬†Among air-breathing animals, beaked whales are some of the most extreme divers, with some species¬†regularly diving for an hour at a depth over 3,300¬†ft. ¬†The longest and deepest foraging dive recorded is 137.5 minutes at 9,816¬†ft. This is the greatest dive-depth known for any mammal.¬†Beaked whales are moderate in size, ranging from 13 to 43¬†ft and weighing from 1 to 15 tonnes. Their key distinguishing feature is the presence of a ‘beak’, somewhat similar to many dolphins.

The film below shows the pod of 13+ whales hanging out one the surface of the sea. We did catch some great fish that same trip off the shores of Los Cabo’s, yet this amazing and rare spectacle was a site to be seen. You just never know what you are going to come upon when fishing these intriguing waters. To book your own once in a lifetime experience aboard the Chupacabra contact Captain Clay Hensley by email:chupacabrasportfishing@gmail.com or by telephone 1.954.401.8133 (US) or 624.108.4506 (MX). We look forward to having you on board.

Though the beaches are busy the waters are quiet. Though, there is a glimmer of hope in the near distance. Reported striped marlin being caught and we are now, turning the corner back to the great fishing conditions that the shores of Los Cabos are known for.

If you have ever wondered if San Jose Del Cabo, the sister city to Cabo San¬†Lucas,¬†seeing as many spring breakers as the famous Cabo San Lucas, the answer is no. The atmosphere of San Jose is a more mature crowd, though it’s a great place to have fun and only a 25-minute cab ride from San Lucas, San Jose offers more a more cultural experience. The First Annual NFL Hall Of Fame Cancer Charity Fishing & Golfing Tournament Hosted in Cabo San Lucas

This year marks the first annual NFL Hall Of Fame Cancer charity tournament in Cabo San Lucas. The tournament consisted of two days of golf and one day of fishing with approximately 25 registered fishing vessels. Each registered boat will included at least one NFL Hall of Fame Great or NFL Legend. With the Chupacabra being owned by Dr. Blake Stamper, being involved in a cancer charity tournament is a tradition the team tends to continue.

The NFL Hall Of Famers that joined Captain Clay Hensley and Team Chupacabra for a day of fishing in Cabo San Lucas during the tournament were Ray Guy of the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and Warren Sapp of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders.
Ray Guy* is a retired American football punter for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders of the NFL. Guy was a unanimous All-American selection in 1972 as a senior at the University of Southern Mississippi, and was the first pure punter ever to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, when the Oakland Raiders selected him with the 23rd overall pick in 1973. A six-time NFL All-Pro, Guy is widely considered to be the greatest punter of all time and has been a seven-time finalist as a modern era candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame on August 2, 2014, becoming only the second pure kicker and the first pure punter so honoured.

Warren Sapp*¬†is a former¬†American football¬†defensive tackle. A¬†Hall of Famer, Sapp played¬†college football¬†for the¬†University of Miami, where he was recognized as a consensus¬†All-American¬†and won multiple awards. Sapp played in the¬†NFL from 1995 to 2007 for the¬†Tampa Bay Buccaneers¬†and¬†Oakland Raiders. Following Sapp’s NFL career, he was an analyst on¬†NFL Network¬†until 2015.¬†At the time of his retirement, Sapp was one of only eight defensive players in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl, be named Defensive Player of the Year and win a Super Bowl or pre-Super-Bowl NFL title.

Team Chupacabra ended up winning 4 of 5 categories in the tournament. Our day on the water was filled with laughter, joking and banter. We were happy to be a part the event and have the special guest on board that we did. Rest assured there was never a dull moment with this crew. Being out on the water on a fishing charter in Cabo San Lucas is always a good day.

A heartwarming spin to this story is that just the week before the Chupacabra hosted an child cancer survivor and entrepreneur named Luke Lang. Luke won a trip on the Chupacabra years before at a silent auction and has been back on the boat a couple times sense. This young mans inspiring story and soul brightened our day. Through his struggle with cancer he experienced embarrassment while receiving his chemo treatments because of the hospital gown he was made to wear. He shared with us that wearing the gown made him feel even sicker and he set out to create a solution. He created a kids clothing line with easy snap sides for children receiving chemo treatment. He is also an advocate for many cancer research organizations and a source of strength for many children who are affected by cancer . For more information or to support Luke’s Fastbreak’s head to their website: Www.lukesfastbreaks.com.

We had the NFL Hall Of Famers sign a special football for Luke and were able to have one of our sponsors hand deliver it to him in Texas. The synergy of the events is definitely news worthy. What a great feeling to be a part of a cancer charity tournament and give a gift to a cancer survivor.
